IATEFL Voices Issue 211 December 2009

Finding elementary level TEFL resources for adult learners is often challenging. Assuming that learners have taken English lessons previously, core material attracting zero and false beginners is crucial. The colourful pages of English Result Elementary invite both these learner types on a lively journey ….

"Pronunciation Games" is exactly what I hoped it would be. I've been trying to find fun, diverse ways to focus on pronuncation (not just looking at minimal pairs). This fresh approach to pronunciation is appreciated both by the students and myself.

This series is very good for getting kids writing. They find the warm-up exercises interesting and they are well graded to lead towards the actual writing. There is also a good exercise on checking your own writing and correcting for the pupils to do which they love. Colourful and fun. Good value.

Despite being a key area of English language learning, pronunciation is often given short shrift in English language course books, and teachers often have to create their own materials (if they have the time) or utilise additional resources.

English Pronunciation in Use is a new addition to the In Use stable of books that began with the very successful English Grammar in Use. As with all books in the series, this book is designed to be used by the individual learner, & in this case with the intermediate & above learner. You may know the author Mark Hancock, through using his excellent Pronunciation Games.

Excerpt from review... There is little preparation time required due to its comprehensive and well-organized teacher’s book. The student’s book can be used easily as the main course book, accompanied by supplementary lessons. The workbook can be given to students to use as homework to consolidate the students’ knowledge.

After having spent 8 years teaching English in Thailand and Mexico to young children, I was overjoyed when I discovered this teacher's gem. The songs are fun, clear and easy to sing. The book gives great grammar exercises for use alongside the songs. I cannot say enough good stuff about this book and its cassettes.
