IATEFL 2014: The ELT World in Four Plenaries

Map of ELT by Mark Hancock

I think of the world of ELT as a map divided into four quarters – the content of what we teach – the English language; the reasons why the students are learning – their needs; how people learn – pedagogy; and the procedures we use to teach – methodology. None of these quarters can be neglected, and I was particularly pleased to see that they were all represented in the ELT plenaries at Harrogate 2014. Speaking on language was Michael Hoey, on needs, David Graddol, on pedagogy Kathleen Graves, and on methodology, Sugata Mitra. All excellent speakers in very different ways – click on their names for individual reviews.
