Christine Coombe gave the opening the plenary on Tuesday morning: her topic – 10 Characteristics of Highly Effective EF/SL Teachers; her purpose – to get us reflecting on our own criteria for effectiveness and to self-evaluate accordingly; her idea – that we might identify areas of our teaching that we might want to work on. After presenting disclaimers and assumptions, she asked us to identify our initial motivations and reasons for becoming a TESOL/TEFL teacher before offering definitions of teacher effectiveness, and then going on to presenting her top 10 characteristics. Here they are:

  • Having a calling for the profession
  • Having professional knowledge
  • Possessing personal qualities
  • Having with-it-ness
  • Being instructionally effective
  • Being a good communicator
  • Being street-smart
  • Having a willingness to go the extra mile
  • Being a life –long learner
  • Having a life outside the profession
