This maze focuses on the vowel digraph 'ea'. Usuailly, this represents the /i:/ sound, as in 'teach', but there are also plenty of exceptions which often trip learners up, like 'pear'!

The vowel sound in FAT is usually spelt with the single vowel letter ‘a’. Sadly, the opposite is not true: sometimes a single letter ‘a’ may be pronounced as a different vowel sound.

Many of us who are in the business of teaching English suffer from a feeling of accent anxiety. We are embarrassed that our accent does not match the ideal ‘standard’ accent found in books and dictionaries, and we worry that our speech may not be a good pronunciation model for our students. But perhaps our worries are misguided.
