In this class, we will address three big questions in pronunciation teaching:
A. Why are we teaching it? We will consider how the needs of learners very according to context, and how this affects what we teach. We will differentiate pronunciation for productive and for receptive purposes.
B. What aspects of phonology are relevant? We will review the different aspects of pronunciation to be covered, from individual sounds and spelling patterns to connected speech and intonation. We will also how the learner’s L1 will affect the features to be taught.
C. How can we teach it in the class? We will look at different kinds of activity, matching them up to different kinds of purpose – physical articulation to awareness-raising and interactive communication. More time will be allowed for this third part of the session to allow practical demonstrations of certain activity types, along with ideas of how to adapt them for the needs of specific learners and contexts.
