Claire's presentation was a report on a Europe-wide project for accelerating literacy by making teachers and students more aware of the generic structure of texts. The scope of the talk was not confined to ELT, but education in the broader sense, and the idea of 'learning to read' and 'reading to learn'.

Head or Heart?

ELT Materials: Head or Heart?

In this personality test, students choose the option which best represents their attitude in various situations. From this, they 'discover' whether they are driven more by rationality or emotion.

Patagonia

ELT Materials: Patagonia
This activity is based on a video about the first European settlers in the Magellan Strait. The video is used as a springboard for vocabulary work, and leads into an internet research activity in which students find out more about the events in the video.

Crazy Email

ELT Materials: Crazy Email

The students read a holiday email which is full of nonsense and contradictions. They have to identify the nonsense and say what is wrong with it.

Internet Debate

ELT Materials: Internet Debate

In this activity, students read an article in favour of internet censorship. Then they prepare for a class debate for and against this kind of censorship. The activity is inpired by the debates in For and Against by L G Alexander (Longman 1969).

Under the Water

ELT Materials: Under The Water

This is a short mystery story in two parts. The questions challenge students to imagine or deduce what happened. The story was inspired by the Roald Dahl tale The Landlady, and I first wrote it for New Ways to Go 4 (CUP).

Body in the Gym

ELT Materials: Body in the Gym

This is a short murder story, with a note taking activity. The story is rich in past simple passive, and there is an extension activity to focus on this language point. There are audio downloads in case you want to make this into a listening activity rather than reading.

Shop of Dreams

ELT Materials: Shop of Dreams

Students look at a picture and try to describe it from memory. They listen to a poem and relate it to the picture. Then they read the poem and decide on the points of view in each verse.
