Materials Design: Helping Learners Become More Effective Listeners

Designing a listening lesson based on authentic texts poses several challenges, not least because of the qualities of the texts themselves. However, with careful task design, we can mediate the difficulty level and ‘teach’ rather than 'test' listening.

In this workshop, we’ll look some problems non-expert listeners face and consider key features of various tasks and activities which help the learner overcome these difficulties. Participants will leave the session with ideas on how to design a skills lesson using auhtentic listening texts of their own choice.
